PAINTING EXIT STRATEGIES
Sam Meekan & Rebecca Porter
19.04.24 - 30.04.24
Sam and Rebecca exchange their bad painting metaphors in pursuit of new forms from out of mud or mahjong.
A painting exit strategy also sounds like a way of getting out of painting altogether, since you could just stop today, i.e. Philip Guston’s
remark that he painted only because of a strong desire not to.
The works in this show try to translate this escape (the enticements of art school, hobbyist gaming, teachers, employment, etc) to functional artistic freedom, whatever that means. This contradiction always thwarts their strategies of doubling down on pure means and ends, imported from wherever and whoever might be useful (particularly each other).
Opening event for PAINTING EXIT STRATEGIES is kindly sponsored by Tallboy and Moose.
